'Robin Hood,' Russell Crowe demonstrates archery skills on 'Regis and Kelly'
'Robin Hood,' Russell Crowe demonstrates archery skills on 'Regis and Kelly' - Actor, Russell Crowe appeared on Live With Regis and Kelly Friday morning to promote his new film, Robin Hood. As part of his appearance, he demonstrated his use of the bow and arrow. Robin Hood is based on the folklore origins of the character as well as the book by Howard Pyle.

Mr. Crowe talked about the difference in his new Robin Hood versus the many films that have been made of the character before. Mr. Philbin mentioned seeing Errol Flynn's version when he was younger, and Mr. Crowe agreed that Olivia de Havilland's costuming back then was spectacular. He joked about Kevin Costner's costume in Prince of Thieves.

In defining the difference with his film, he said, "What it's about - is throw out the comic books, super powers, cliches, and start from scratch."

Kelly Ripa asked whether this movie was about how Robin Hood became Robin Hood, and Mr. Crowe agreed. He said when he was approached about the project that he considered whether or not there was any fresh ground to cover with the character. He found that, historically, there was. The legend of Robin Hood goes all the way back to 878 AD, he said.

Mr. Philbin asked Mr. Crowe about his archery skills learned for the film. "I"m not sure I mastered it," he said. He showed the audience an old bow made from a yew tree. Then he drew a target of Gelman's face (Michael Gelman, a producer on Live!) at Mr. Philbin's request. He shot one arrow that landed right at the top of the head on the drawing.

Mr. Crowe said, "My excuse is you always need 3 arrows." Then he went over and drew an apple around the arrow, making it look as though he'd nailed the arrow right in the middle of the apple.

The show presented a clip from the movie where Robin Hood and Marion must pretend to be married in order for her to save her land. Marion, played by Academy Award-winning actor, Cate Blanchett, reluctantly invited Robin Hood to her chamber to keep up appearances for the servants.

Robin Hood opens in theaters on May 14, 2010
